In a recent incident, organised crime gangs targeted supermarket lorries carrying high-value goods like cigarettes and alcohol. These criminals monitored specific trucks, exploiting stops and traffic slowdowns to steal cargo, with drivers being targeted up to eight times a day.

This case highlights the growing problem of freight crime in the UK. The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Freight and Logistics released a report, Securing Our Supply Chains, urging the government to take action.

Key Findings

  • Increasing Incidents: In 2023, there were 5,370 reported cases of heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and cargo theft, a 5% rise from the previous year.
  • Major Financial Losses: Direct losses amounted to £68.3 million, with estimates suggesting the true cost exceeds £700 million when considering retail values.

APPG Recommendations

  1. Secure Parking Standards: Implement stricter standards to ensure all lorry parks provide a safe environment for drivers and cargo.
  2. Planning Reforms: Include hauliers’ needs in the National Planning Policy Framework to enhance supply chain security.
  3. National Parking Programme: Address the shortage of secure lorry parking facilities.
  4. Support for Law Enforcement: Increase funding and resources for police to combat organised freight crime.

Steps Companies and Drivers Can Take

For Companies:

  • Vet Carriers: Ensure carriers are legitimate and reliable.
  • Use Advanced Technology: GPS tracking, secure locks, and alarms can deter theft.
  • Provide Secure Parking: Encourage using well-lit, secure areas for overnight stops.

For Drivers:

  • Stay Alert: Be aware of surroundings and avoid predictable routes.
  • Secure Vehicles: Lock all doors and secure trailers when parked.

Insurance Considerations

  • Evaluate Needs: Assess goods and risks to determine the right insurance coverage.
  • Understand Policies: Be aware of exclusions and ensure policies cover theft.
  • Explore Add-Ons: High-value shipments may need additional coverage.

By taking these steps, companies and drivers can better protect their goods, while tailored insurance offers peace of mind and financial protection.
